On March 18th, 1986, F-BVFF made the first Concorde landing in East Germany at Leipzig airport.
While enroute on airway A4 at FL350 (35,000 ft), flight AFR 4778 was allowed to go supersonic up to M1.5 for four minutes . As it was reported back then, this special permission was given to perform noise measurements on the ground.
Upon arrival at Leipzig airport, Concorde performed a low pass over runway 11 and landed after her second approach on the same runway. Beside the runway were several large tripods, which also may have been related to this noise measurement activity.
I would like to know why these measurements were taken and by whom?
By the way, a British Airways Concorde followed suit on the next day. Needless to say that both birds drew large crowds lining the airport fence for hours.
Any additional information on these flights to Leipzig would be appreciated.
